Melvin Paul Macdonald

January 23, 1931 — November 3, 2013

Melvin Paul MacDonald, 82, of West Kingston, died Sunday. He was the beloved husband of Doris (Cayouette) MacDonald for 44 years. Born in East Greenwich, he was a son of the late Frank & Julia (Cassamas) Zenga. Mr. MacDonald was a Computer Systems Analyst at Quonset Point during the 1960’s and early 1970’s, developing main frame computers. During this time period he taught computer programing at Providence College. In 1972, he became the owner and operator of South County Pest Control. He operated the business for many years, selling it to his son, Scott in 1991. He remained active in the business, helping his son with the bookkeeping and other business aspects. He was an active supporter of youth sports and sponsored many Little League baseball teams and football teams. In his earlier years he enjoyed piloting single engine planes and was a founding member of a private flying club based at Quonset Point. His family will remember his gift for story-telling and how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Jane W. Steere of Westfield, MA, George W. Steere, Jr. of Richmond, and Scott F. MacDonald of Wakefield; fourteen grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Frederick “Bebe” and Barbara MacDonald of East Greenwich; and two sisters and their husbands, Doris and Nicholas Polka of Marco island, FL and Philomena and Steven Landrigan of Sunapee, NH. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
