Maureen Alice Schmitz

January 10, 1937 — December 21, 2022

Maureen A. (Clancy) Schmitz, 85, of Wakefield, died Wednesday, December 21, 2022. She was the wife of the late Paul E. Schmitz. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage together.


Maureen was born in New York City, NY and she was the daughter of the late John Francis and Alice (Walsh) Clancy.

Maureen was employed as an administrative assistant at the Mahopac High School for 15 years.


Maureen was a caring and loving person with a quick smile and warm greetings for everyone. Her happy outlook and sense of humor touched everyone she met.


She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a marvelous baker and always had a special dessert ready for when guests visited. She served as a communicant at her church and volunteered for many years at the food pantry.


Maureen was the mother of: Carolann Schmitz of Cortlandt, NY; Mary Dona of Webster, MA; Cmdr. Joanne Schmitz (US Navy, Ret.) of England; and James Schmitz of West Haven, Utah. She was predeceased by her grandson Christopher Dona who died tragically in a training accident while serving as an Army Ranger. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Melissa Curtiss, Brian Dona, Jack Edmondson, Josh Schmitz and Melinda Schmitz, and 4 great-grandchildren, Frankie Rice, Lily, Reily and Natalie Curtiss.


In addition to her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren Maureen is survived by her sister Patricia Roepke and brother John Clancy Jr and his wife Susan . She has 4 nieces and 4 nephews.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. James Chapel, 2079 Matunuck Schoolhouse Road. Burial will follow at Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Rhode Island at 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
