Mary Carpenter Wehbi

October 11, 1918 — August 6, 2016

MARY CARPENTER WEHBI, 97 Mary Knox Carpenter Wehbi, 97, entered into peace on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the South Kingstown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Mary was born on October 11, 1918, a daughter of the late Dr. James and Paulette Carpenter. She graduated from the Baldwin School in 1938 and worked with the World Affairs Council for a time in the 1940s. She married the late William Dunlap in February 1950 and they resided in Colorado, Virginia, California and Pennsylvania during their time together, raising three children. She married her second husband, Ahmed Wehbi, in 1973 in Baalbeck, Lebanon. Mary accepted Jesus into her heart in 1976 and maintained a personal relationship with her Lord and Savior for the rest of her life. She was a member of Narberth Presbyterian Church from 1977 until she moved to Rhode Island in 2000, and following that was a member of the Saint Francis of Assisi parish in Wakefield. Mary had an infectious smile, a sweet, gentle and innocent spirit, and loved to laugh at the zany things in life. She was predeceased by her first husband, William Dunlap, in 1978 and by her siblings James Carpenter, Jr. in 1966 and Margaret Hykes in 2002. Mary is survived by her daughter, Laurie Schneider of Wakefield, Rhode Island and her sons Andy and Gordie Dunlap of Pennsylvania; her grandchildren Becky Hartwell, David Schneider, Rachel Astle, Andrea Schneider, Jadyn and Justin Dunlap, and Kayla Copp; as well as four highly adorable great-grandchildren. Mary was a talented writer, editor and artist who also loved music, dancing, and learning other languages. She put these gifts and interests to great use over the course of her life. But her greatest talent was making people smile and touching the hearts of those around her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday August 13 at 10 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield, followed by burial at the Saint Francis Cemetery. Visiting hours will be private for the family.
