Mary J. Terry, a beloved educator and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully In Wakefield, RI on October 26, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on Long Island, New York, Mary lived in Johnston RI for over 50 years. Mary was the daughter of the late Charles and Bridget (Whyte) Terry.
Mary earned her bachelor's degree at Rhode Island College of Education and devoted 35 remarkable years to teaching at Graniteville School in Johnston, RI where she was recognized as Teacher of the Year. Her impact on the lives of her students was profound. Mary was a member of Rhode Island Retired Teachers. After Mary retired from Johnston Public Schools, she taught for two years at St. Raymond's School in Providence.
Mary then dedicated 20 years to San Miguel School in Providence as a volunteer where her commitment to education and community service was celebrated. She was honored to be the first recipient of the Miguel Medal, an award recognizing an individual who exemplifies a strong commitment to service and upholds the Lasallian Mission.
For many years, Mary was an avid bridge player who played at the master level. She was a member of the American Contract Bridge League. Mary also had a love of travel and was fortunate to travel extensively with many of her friends
Mary is survived by her brother, Charles Terry and his wife Carol; a niece, Susan Scollo and her husband Joseph; a nephew, Michael Terry and his wife April; three grand nephews, a grandniece and two great-grand nephews. Mary also leaves behind many lifelong friends. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, Riverside.
