Mary Elizabeth (O'Connell) Kane, a resident of South Bay Manor, Wakefield, died Monday, April 6, 2015. She was the wife of the late James F. Kane. Born in Providence July 9, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Leah L. (McGowan) O'Connell. She grew up in the Gaspee Plateau section of Warwick and graduated from St. Francis Xavier Academy in 1947. After working briefly for the Rhode Island State Department of Health, she joined the Federal Service and was an Executive Secretary in the Providence District of the Internal Revenue Service, eventually becoming Secretary to the District Director. Upon her retirement from Federal Service, she was presented with the Albert Gallatin Award, the United States Department of the Treasury's highest career service award. Following her marriage in 1952, she moved to the Buttonwoods section of Warwick where she lived for the next fifty-seven years. She was a communicant of Saints Rose and Clement Parish where she once served on the parish council. She is survived by her brother, Daniel J. O'Connell, and her sister, Jane M. Stich, both of Narragansett. She was the sister of the late John A. O'Connell Jr., J. Paul O'Connell and Anne L. O'Connell and the stepdaughter of the late Louise P. (Hanley) O'Connell. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 14, at 11:00 AM in Saint Mary Star of the Sea Church, Point Judith Road, Narragansett. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Burial will be private.
