Mary Elizabeth Evans

May 14, 1940 — June 1, 2023

Mary E. Evans, 83, of South Kingstown, passed away on Thursday, June 1st surrounded by loved ones. She was born in South Kingstown, RI to her parents, the late Frederick and Edna (Gavitt) Martella. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles “Bill” Evans for 55 years.


In her earlier years Mary worked in the lunch room at Wakefield Elementary School before moving on to become a teacher’s assistant at the Growing Child of Narragansett. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines of Kingston. Mary was also active in the South Kingstown Firemen’s Women’s Auxiliary. She loved attending her sons sporting events and watching her granddaughter Lauren’s dance recitals. She also enjoyed reading, sitting on the Narragansett seawall and eating pizza and homemade pistachio cake. Her favorite TV shows were Dr. Phil and the Golden Girls.


She leaves behind her son, Craig Evans and Gail, granddaughter, Lauren and sister, Linda Carr. She is pre-deceased by her son Todd Evans.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Thursday, June 8th in St Francis of Assisi, 114 High Street, Wakefield, RI. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary’s name to the Rhode Island Child Advocacy Program in South Kingstown. The family would also like to thank the staff in the memory care at Scallop Shell nursing home for the wonderful care that they gave Mary.
