Obituary

Martha L. Gargle, 83 of New York, NY passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, April 20th surrounded by family. Born in South Kingstown to her loving parents, the late Thaddeus and Christine (Tucker) Holberton. She was the devoted wife to the late Alan Lawrence Gargle for 48 years.

Martha (known as "Marty") was a 1961 graduate of South Kingstown High School. Finding her sense of adventure at a time when there were fewer career opportunities for women, she applied to an airline training school in Chicago and became a United Airlines stewardess. She lived in Washington DC, Pittsburgh and later in New York City where she met her husband, Alan. Later, she returned to school and earned a bachelor's degree from Hunter College in 1974. Following the birth of her daughter, Tamar, she worked in sales at several employment agencies and opened her own employment business with her husband in 1992.

Later in life, Martha decided to pursue another long-time passion and attended the HB Studio of acting in Manhattan where she was a student of Austin Pendleton, the character actor, director and playwright. She became a member of the Screen Actors Guild and was cast in two movies, Aunt Rose and Deep in The Darkness.

Martha was a lifelong learner and after retirement she looked for ways to stay engaged in her community.  She volunteered with charities who worked with migrants, traveled to the border in Arizona, met with ranchers, border agents and migrants in Mexico. She wanted to understand all perspectives and viewpoints.

She is survived by her daughter Tamar, son-in-law Thomas Krakowiak and grandson Cameron Krakowiak. She is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Hutchins and Dale Wahlberg, nephews Mark Hutchins II, Kyle Hutchins, Karl Wahlberg Jr and Thaddeus Wahlberg. She is pre-deceased by her husband Alan.

Burial will take place on Saturday, April 25th at 10 am at New Fernwood Cemetery, West Kingston, RI. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to:
