Mark "Hutch" Libby Hutchinson passed away on May 1st in the home that he so lovingly built for his family. Known to most as “Hutch,” he was a devoted husband to his wife of 43 years, Lori Scionti, and was the proud father to Benjamin Hutchinson of Ellabell, GA and Olivia Hutchinson of Seattle, WA.
Hutch grew up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and was so proud of being a “Maineiac.” He spent childhood summers and weekends at his family’s farm in Whitefield, ME hunting, fishing and exploring the woods for hours on end. He loved to tell stories of his adventures to anyone willing to listen…he was a talker. The woods of his childhood is where he learned his deep love and respect for all wildlife, especially his beloved dogs.
When his children were young, Hutch was a deeply caring and attentive Father. He was an Assistant Scout Leader for his son’s troop, Kingston 138, where he loved sharing his wealth of knowledge on camping, hiking, and survival in the great outdoors. He went on every camp out- no matter the weather- taking any opportunity to teach the scouts how to survive in any condition. He would sit around the campfire at night reading scary stories to the boys, passing along his love of reading.
Outside of scary stories for the scouts, Hutch was a voracious reader with an extensive library. He was passionate about history- particularly American War History. He had a wealth of knowledge thanks to his love for reading, and could impressively recite names, dates, and tales from memory.
When he wasn’t reading, he loved nothing more than saltwater fishing on the Drifter out of Galilee. He was happiest on the water with his best friends, boat Captain Rich Chatowsky and Howland Green.
Hutch made a career out of the incredible finish carpenter and craftsman skills he claimed. He worked as the General Manager/Foreman for Paul Schurman Builders for over 38 years, working on some of the most beautiful homes in South County. He formed life long friendships with many of his contractors and customers.
Hutch was a loyal and giving person who knew no strangers, just friends he hadn’t met yet. He was a fiercely loyal friend- he showed endless generosity, kindness, and hospitality to those he loved. He will be dearly missed by all those who were lucky enough to know him. We will all continue adventuring on in his name- learning, exploring, and loving.
Hutch is predeceased by his father Robert Burns Hutchinson and mother Rae Francis (Libby) Hutchinson. He is survived by his brother John Hutchinson of Wellesley, MA and his sister Gail Conley of Whitefield ME.
Any donations in his memory can be made to Animal Rescue RI, 506B Curtis Corner Rd. Peace Dale RI 02879.
There will be a celebration of Hutch’s life on Saturday May 10 from 1-4 at his home at 46 Fortin Rd, Kingston. Parking is available at Christ the King Church.
