Marika Moosbrugger of Wakefield, RI died peacefully on September 16th, 2023. She was the founder of the South County Montessori School, and for more than forty years she was the head of school.
Born in Austria, she lived in the United States for fifty-six years. While she did not have her own children, Marika became a powerful influence to hundreds of young people who began their early education under her leadership. She was a passionate advocate for education and understood the importance of teachers and families in creating a beloved community.
Marika was a brilliant educator, a loving aunt, a loyal friend, a dear sister, and a woman dedicated to the welfare of all animals. She was wise and compassionate, and an inspiration to all who had the good fortune to know her.
For many, Marika's love was boundless and her intelligence most rare and inspiring. Her students recall what she taught them, her creative ways with people and things, her generous view of the world and the people in it. Marika was a model of how to teach and why. Other students speak of how their courage and spirit came in large part from her presence in their lives. It is hard to imagine life without her.
She is survived by many relatives and friends in Europe and in the United States.
To honor her life, you are welcome to make a contribution to the South County Montessori School, 1239 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown, RI 02852 or to the Animal Rescue, Rhode Island, 5068 Curtis Corner Road, Peace Dale, RI 02879.
