Margaret M. Cotter, 89, of South Kingstown died on Saturday, October 19, 2013. She was the wife of the late John W. Cotter. She was born on Aug. 25, 1924, in Providence, the daughter of the late Mary (Toher) and William J. Barry. A graduate of Hope High School, she worked for the New England Telephone Co. for several years before her marriage on Oct. 11, 1947. She also worked for Summit Medical in the 1970s. Marge and Jack raised their family in the Edgewood section of Cranston. She was a longtime advocate for the poor, and she had volunteered for both Amos House and Advent House in Providence. When she was in her 60s, she marched on Washington with her husband. She had been active in the former Genesis Community. Marge’s life revolved around her family, and she was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by six sons, Stephen B. Cotter of Killingly, Conn., and his wife, Carol; John W. Cotter of South Kingstown; James F. Cotter of Providence; Timothy J. Cotter of South Kingstown and his wife, Betty; Paul F. Cotter of East Providence and his wife, Jane; and David B. Cotter of East Longmeadow, Mass., and his wife, Lori. She had 11 beloved grandchildren: Stephen Cotter Jr. and his wife, Susan; Matthew Cotter and his wife, Megan; Justin Cotter; Carolyn Cotter; Perry Cotter; Taylor Cotter; Kyle Cotter; Colby Cotter; Zachary Cotter; Alex Cotter, and Mary Cotter. She also is survived by two great-grandchildren, Hanna and Kaelyn Cotter. She was the sister of the late Betty Barry and Ann San Souci. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Burial will take place later in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Amos House, 413 Friendship St., Providence, RI 02907.
