Luma Green, Jr., 88, formerly of Orchard Ave, died Thursday February 2, 2012 at South County Hospital, Wakefield, RI. Born December 27, 1923 in St. Bernard Parish, LA. Luma, the eldest child born to Adele Jones and Luma Green, is survived by his sister, Augustine Jones of Alabama, his sons, Luma Green 3rd, Leo Green, Fred Green Sr., his daughters, Naomi Green and Tina Green-Perry. His surviving children live in RI, CT and FL. Luma leaves behind 5 grandsons, 4 grand-daughters, and 6 great grandchildren. Mr. Green joined the United States Navy in 1940. He served through World War II in the Pacific theatre of operations. He was also active during the Korean War and the Naval Blockade on Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Mr. Green retired from active Navy service in 1965 as a Senior Dining Chief Petty Officer. After working in various jobs, he started his 2nd career with General Dynamics in Groton, CT. He started there as a pipe-fitter, and advanced to a supervisory position leading work crews. Eventually, Luma moved up to an administrative position, went to night school for additional training, and was employed as a Contract Change Analyst. He retired from General Dynamics in 1987. Luma was active in the community through his coaching of Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He also served on the South Kingstown Lion's Club. During his time with the Lion's he was a Region Chairman, a Zone Chairman, and the President of The SK Lion's from 1991-1992. Mr. Green also received the prestigious Melvin Jones Award. A wake will be held at Avery Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St, Wakefield on Tuesday evening, Feb. 7th, from 6-8pm. A Christian Funeral Service on Wednesday, February 8th at 10am at The Wakefield Baptist Church, 236 Main St., Wakefield. Burial with military honors to follow at the RI Veteran's Cemetery, Route 2 Exeter.
