Lowell V. Berry

September 3, 1924 — April 9, 2014

Lowell V. Berry, of Narragansett RI, died, April 9, 2014, after a long struggle with cancer. Born September 3, 1924 in Providence to Ross W. Berry and Lois (Varney) Berry and resided in Pawtucket for his youth, attending Pawtucket public schools and Moses Brown School. He was fortunate to be able to spend summers in Sand Hill Cove and Kenyon Farms and grew to love boats and the water, and meeting his wife to-be, the late Priscilla Donle Berry. They were married 63 years. Lowell served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 in Atlantic and Pacific theaters, including time on ships Tripoli, Block Island, and Appalachian. After the war he married and settled in Warwick. Lowell participated in several Newport-to-Bermuda yacht races aboard the schooner "Fortune" and continued a passion for sailing all his life. Alongside his father, he was a managing principal at Doby Industrial Finishing Company in Providence, serving in that capacity until selling the company in 1975. Following that he worked in responsible positions for D. Patrick & Sons and Industrial and Commercial Finishing. Lowell and Priscilla together maintained a love for the water, continuing the summer traditions they shared, and establishing a permanent residence in 1983 in the East Pond (Bluff Hill Cove) area of Point Judith Pond. Together and separately, they were highly esteemed and trusted neighbors and friends. We are most grateful that Lowells last months were made easier by his long-time friend, Anthony "Chip" Steere, and Patricia Brighton, as well as his many other friends, who brought great love to their frequent visits. Lowell is survived by a son, Jeff R. Berry, daughter-in-law, Cynthia Cole Berry of Narragansett, and all who had the honor of knowing him. A memorial service will be held Saturday April 19th at 11 a.m. at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Visiting hours are Friday April 18, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. Burial will be private in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to Home & Hospice Care of RI, South Team, 143 Main Street, Wakefield, RI 02879 or South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879.
