Louis Joseph Deangelis, Sr.

January 2, 1921 — September 26, 2016

- Louis J. De Angelis, Sr. passed away peacefully Monday Evening September 26, 2016 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Louis was a resident of Narragansett, RI and had wintered in Ft Myers, Florida since 1985. He was the husband of the late Jean M. De Angelis. They were married for over 63 years. He previously lived in Providence RI. Born on January 2, 1921, Louis was the son of the late Guido and Carrie (Cipriano) De Angelis, brother of the late Anna Miraglia and Marie De Angelis. He was also pre-deceased by his sons Louis J. De Angelis, Jr., and Paul M. De Angelis. He is survived by his children Ann M. De Angelis & Jeana L De Angelis of Pawtcket, Steven A. De Angelis of Narragansett and Matthew C. DeAngelis (Cheryl) of Portsmouth. Also eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sport was a huge activity throughout Lou’s early years, high-school, and college years. And it continued well past those years. Baseball was his passion, starting with afternoon and weekend play at Davis Park in his younger years. It continued throughout his High School years at LaSalle Academy and into prep-school at Moses Brown where he was awarded the MVP trophy in 1940. He went on to play for Brown University only letting WWII interrupt life on the diamond. During college he was offered a contact to play for the Red Sox but being the Yankees fan he was, he declined. He entered The US Marine Corps in 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During WWII he rose through the ranks becoming a Captain. His tour of duty took him through the South Pacific theatre including Guam, Guadalcanal, Okinawa and ending in Tsingtao, China. He received a Presidential Citation for his service. He was also attended the War College at Yale University. When the Korean Conflict broke out, Lou was called back into the service, leaving his new wife and first child at home. He spent 2 years at the Pentagon. He was discharged from the Marine Corps as a Captain. After graduating from Brown University, he went to work for New England Electric where he built a career as spokesperson and Director of Public Relations in the Worcester Mass area, eventually moving back to Rhode Island taking the PR reigns at Narragansett Electric Company. Lou spent 40 years working for the Utility and became known throughout the region as the “go to guy” to meet people in Washington. One day the Chairman of New England Power Company went to visit Senator John O Pastore. Upon seeing that Lou was not with him, the Senator kicked him out and don’t come back unless you have Lou De Angelis with you. Most all of the Senators and Representatives from Southern New England were friends with Lou. While he had a growing family and a busy career to contend with Louis was also involved in civic causes. He was appointed to the first RI State Board of Education and was instrumental in the development and opening of Rhode Island Junior College, n ow known as CCRI. He was also involved with Junior Achievement of RI and various committees of the United Way. And he was very active in fund raising for his Alma Mater’s . He was a member of the Aurora Civic Association, The Boston Clover Club, Providence Rotary and Toast-masters, Laurel Lane Golf Club, Kelly Greens Golf Club and Gallilee Beach Club During his career, baseball took a backseat to golf. And in his later years Golf was everything. He played well into his 90’s, at least three days a week. He was a loving father to his children and also a mentor to many of his children’s friends. Many times friends of his children would stop in to visit with Lou and to talk about sports, politics, when was it the right time to go to Florida to play golf, or problems in their lives. Lou touched the lives of everyone he met and he will always be remembered for his warmth and kindness and will be sadly missed. Visiting hours will be held on Friday September 30 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at the Avery Storti Funeral Home 88 Columbia St, Wakefield . A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday October 1 at 10:00am at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church 864 Pt. Judith Rd., Narragansett.
