Leslie R. Stone, Jr., 90, of Wakefield, RI, USAR, Ret. and Professor Emeritus at URI, died April 28th at home. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Margaret “Johnny” (Thackerary) Stone. Born in Penacook, NH and raised in Hope Valley, RI, he was the son of the late Leslie R. Stone Sr. and Lillie (Bruckshaw) Stone. A graduate of RI State College in 1940, he served in World War II in the South Pacific with the 182nd Infantry Regiment, American Division, and saw action in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and the Phillipines. After the war, he returned to U.R.I., earned his M.S. and began his teaching career in the Physics Department continuing for more than three decades. He enjoyed his retirement, growing apples and daffodils, sailing and fishing. Besides his wife he leaves his daughters, Martha Fleishman of Martha’s Vineyard and Jennifer Stone Gaines of Woods Hole, MA; and granddaughters, Sarah M. Gaines of Paris, Hannah R. Gaines of Madison, WI, Nina R. Fleishman of Raleigh, NC and Giulia M. Fleishman of Brooklyn, NY. Services and burial will be private.
