Kim M. Hazard, 62, of Wakefield, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 27th. She was the beloved wife of Nelson Hazard, Sr. for 45 years. Born in South Kingstown, she was a daughter of Wilbur and Jean Marie (Reels) Stanton. Mrs. Hazard was the Matriarch of her family, siblings, the Narragansett Indian Tribe, and the South Kingstown Community. She was the 2nd longest serving tribal member of the Narragansett Indian Tribal Council, serving two terms from 1986 -1990 and 1994-2008. For the last 30 years she has been unprecedented in addressing Native American Issues serving on national and regional boards. Her voice and presence was a catapult of Indian Health services throughout the Indian community, and she had touched many Tribal leaders. Kim was also a leader in the South Kingstown community serving as the first president of the Jr. High Student Council, she was president of the Narragansett little League, and created the first AAU Basketball team in South Kingstown. She will be remembered for always having an "open door" policy at her home and always made people feel welcome. Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by three children, Kimberly Hazard and her fianc Rory Cheatham of South Kingstown, Nelson Hazard Jr. and his companion Angela Brown of North Kingstown, and Stephanie Wilcox and her husband Justin of Narragansett; five grandchildren, Tyra Hazard, Rory Hazard, Ryan Hazard, Shaiann Hazard, and Savannah Hazard; one great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Hazard; two sisters, Carol Stedman of Wakefield and Toni Arnold of Westerly; two brothers, Guy Stanton and William Mark Stanton, both of Wakefield; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours will be at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, on Saturday, February 3rd from 11- 1, followed by a service at 1 pm. Burial will follow in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston.
