Kathleen (McLaughlin) O’Neil, 67, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Michael O’Neil. Kathleen was the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Barbara McLaughlin. Kate was born in Providence, moved to Matunuck as a teen, and then moved to Jamestown when she married the love of her life, Mike O’Neil. Kate was creative in so many ways, and she loved the arts. She knew she wanted to be a hairstylist from the time she was a child and she pursued excellence in her profession throughout her career. Kate cared deeply about each of her clients, and her Creative Hair family, who she graciously shared her gifts and talents with. Kate loved the performing arts, from plays on Broadway and PPAC to live music at the Ganny on Sunday afternoons. She loved tailgating at the Jimmy Buffett concerts and picnics on the train to see the Red Sox. The most memorable Red Sox game was probably when Kate & Mike and Maggie & Matt took her parents to Baltimore just before her dad died. She loved knitting, painting, jigsaw puzzles and creating spectacular gourmet food. She especially enjoyed ‘big, lovely wines’ to go with her food. She and Mike hosted the most amazing Penguin Plunge brunch on New Year’s Day at their home in Jamestown, which was attended by hundreds. Kate loved golfing and her golfing friends. She was an avid reader and loved her book club friends. But above all else, Kate loved her family and Mike’s family, and she was like a second mother to her nieces and nephews. Kate was the sister of Bobbie Fay, Susan Carlson, Maggie LaChance and her husband Matt, John McLaughlin, Ann Ciminero, Peter McLaughlin and his wife Jill, Paul McLaughlin, the late Thomas McLaughlin and his wife Denise, and the late Lisa McLaughlin; sister-in-law to James O’Neil and his wife Robin, Robert O’Neil and his wife Richelle, and Susan Gaynor and her husband Peter; and aunt to Megan and Sean Fay, Ryan Carlson, Michaela D’Agostino, Alycia Collins, Tom and Kelsey McLaughlin, Devin and Danielle Ciminero, Emma and Duffy McLaughlin, Brittany Thurston, Christopher McLaughlin, Sean O’Neil, and Grace Gaynor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South County Hospital Intensive Care Unit, 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879. Due to COVID-19, there will be a Celebration of Life held at a later date.
