Kathleen F. Hicks, 78, of Narragansett, died Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Scalabrini Villa, with her husband by her side, after a decade long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Barrington, RI, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Irene M. (Farley) McCann. Kathleen was educated in the Barrington School System and graduated from Barrington High School in 1954 where she was a Rhode Island Honor Society member. She received her Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from the University of Rhode Island. Kathleen taught in the Barrington, RI School System, the Akron, IA School System and the Narragansett, RI School System for more than three decades. She was a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Narragansett. Kathleen was a member of CHI OMEGA Sorority; she was President of the University of Rhode Island Faculty Wives Club, The National Education Association, a charter member of the “Little Rest” Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s International Women’s Barbershop Singing Society and a member of the Ft. Myers, FL “Spirit of the Gulf” International Award Winning Barbershop Chorus. She was a longtime Docent at South County Museum, a member of the Point Judith Yacht Club. She and her husband loved cruising on their boat “Sea Fever”. Their cruising took them north to the Bay of Funday and across the “Reversing Falls” at the entrance to the St. John River in Brunswick, Canada, down the Eastern Seaboard of the United States to the West Coast of Florida and the Caribbean. She was an avid tennis player and swimmer. She was a lover of Irish Setters. Kathleen is survived by her husband of 55 years Dr. Peter J. Hicks III who she met at the University of Rhode Island in 1954. She was the sister of Irene Dahlberg of San Diego, CA, Joyce Anne Barnes of Lynchburg, VA and the late John H. McCann. She leaves twenty five nephews and nieces and also leaves hundreds of former students who were the love of her life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Rd., Narragansett. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Contributions may be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church or South County Museum.
