Katherine B. Nelson

January 10, 1924 — March 7, 2025

Katherine B. Nelson, 101, of Wakefield, passed away peacefully Friday, March 7, 2025 at Elderwood of Scallop Shell.


She was the wife of the late Col. William Nelson. Born in Stonington, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late James and Katherine (Willard) Oliver. She was the sister of the late Margaret (Peggy) Kendzierski.


Kay, as she liked to be called, was a member of the Snug Harbor Lady's Auxiliary, the Snug Harbor East Matunuck Civic Association (SHEMCA) as it used to be called, the Wakefield Garden Club, German Club, and also took piano lessons in her later years. She helped run the Peace Dale "Store House" with her husband, Bill, serving meals to many with care and dedication. She was a parishioner of St. Peter By the Sea Episcopal Church in Narragansett where she arranged alter flowers for Sunday Mass and served on the hospitality committee.


She is survived by her children William Nelson, Jr. of Germany, Leslie Hanson, of California, Ann Nelson-Hartnett and daughter in law, Joyce Nelson both of Rhode Island. She was the mother of Nathan Nelson who proceeded her in death. She was grandmother to Xavier Nelson, Ryan Hanson, Summer Arrigo-Nelson, Jessica Schiller, Ashley Wiltse, Jennifer Hartnett, Jason Hartnett and Laura Clark and great grandmother to 20 children.


A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 6th, 2025 at 10 AM in St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 72 Central St, Narragansett, RI 02882. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
