Katherine G. Hackett (77) died Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. Born in Providence and raised on Hudson Street, she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Catherine G. (McGuinness) Hackett, and the beloved sister of the late Patricia Lake of Coventry and the late Thomas Hackett of Lake Havasu, Arizona. After living abroad and throughout the US, she returned to Rhode Island and the ocean, and made her home in Narragansett. Kathie was a large and fiery presence in the lives of the people she knew. Regardless of role—Mom, Gramma, Aunt Kathie, friend, teacher, mentor, or colleague—she was a force to be reckoned with. While she was accomplished in her career, the jobs she held were the least important thing about her and she would roll her eyes if we listed them here. She was devoted to the kids she taught and advocated for, especially the troublemakers. She enjoyed them most because she was one. For family, both those related by blood and those she chose, she was a fixer, keeper of secrets, partner in crime, both enforcer and breaker of rules and the person you called to drive the getaway car. You could ask or say anything to her, and she would respond in her tough, blunt, occasionally crass, and unflinching way. Her favorite words of wisdom to those facing tough choices were, “You only get one life, you better live it.” She embodied that philosophy and lived life on her terms. She loved the ocean, daisies, Christmas, music, gossip, adventure, good food, dancing, great stories and laughing with friends. She was, in a word, amazing, and she will be sorely missed. She is survived by her two daughters Christine Hunsinger of Cranston and Leah Gabriel Nurik of Brambleton, VA, sons-in-law Richard Hunsinger and Gennady Nurik, five grandchildren: Jacob, Zachary, and Kaileigh Hunsinger, Katherine and Gwyneth Nurik and countless nieces and nephews. Calling hours are 3:00-5:00pm, July 21, 2022, Avery-Storti Funeral Home, Wakefield, RI. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life held directly after at Chelos on the Water in East Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations to Family Service of Rhode Island.
