June J. Koussa

June J. Koussa, 92, of Narragansett, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 22, 2015. She was the wife of the late Habib “Harold” Koussa. Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Hannah (Hermiz) John. Mrs. Koussa was a graduate of Central Falls High School and attended the University of Rhode Island. She cared for her three sons at home until they were in high school when she started working part-time. Beginning in 1969 she joined the University of Rhode Island working full-time as a secretary in the Physics Department. She also worked for the Dean of the Graduate Library School, Department of Physical Education, and the Graduate School of Oceanography at the Narragansett Bay Campus before her retirement from URI in 1985. Established over 20 years ago The June J. and Habib A. Koussa Endowed Scholarship has awarded academic scholarships to deserving URI students studying Engineering, Business Administration, Physical Education, and Environmental Sciences. These were her three sons’ majors at URI. She has been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, holding memberships with the former Queen Esther Chapter #2 in Pawtucket and currently Woonsocket Chapter #3. Mrs. Koussa loved being with her family, music, dancing, reading, taking walks by the ocean, and attending URI basketball games with her sons. She leaves her sons Harold Koussa of North Attleboro, Carl Koussa of Narragansett and Steven Koussa of Narragansett; her sister, Barbara (John) Ellis of Jonesborough, TN; and her brother, Capt. (Ret.) Joseph R. John of San Diego, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was sister of the late Elizabeth (John) Shaw and Gloria (John) Sandel. Visiting hours are Tuesday 4-8 p.m. in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia St., Peace Dale. Burial will be in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston.
