Julia Elizabeth May, 91, of West Kingston, passed away Tuesday, August 19th. A lifelong resident of South Kingstown, she was born at home in West Kingston on December 4, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Lewis Nelson May Sr. and Mary (Butler) May. Julia worked as a secretary at the University of Rhode Island for more than thirty years before retiring in 1991. She served during WWII in the Women’s Army Corp in the European Theatre of Operations. She was the beloved mother of Margaret Gamba of Richmond; grandchildren, Rebecca May Cole and Jesse David Gamba; great grandchildren, name sake Julia Elizabeth Cole and Benjamin Edward Cole. She was the sister of the late Ella Iverson, Rose Franklin, Hazel Jordan, Avis (Rebecca) Quigley, Helen Roberts, Lois May, Lewis (Nelson) May, Joseph (Arthur) May and Mary Jane DeJong Julia was an avid reader, gardener and bird watcher. She loved long walks in the woods with her beloved dogs ever present, most recently, Sir Henry Higgins. She was a true Swamp Yankee, a strong, independent and caring woman devoted to her family. She was an inspiration and role model to many. A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 11:00 am in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers be sent to Clark Memorial Library 7 Pinehurst Dr., P.O. Box 190, Carolina, R.I. 02812.
