Joyce M. Shoop

Joyce Marie Marchek Shoop, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2023, in Providence, RI. She was born October 4, 1935 in Cicero, Illinois. Joyce was the daughter of the late Lillian (Laube) and George Marchek and the devoted mother of John T. Shoop, of Mercer Island, Washington and Michael C. Shoop (Kimberly Laughlin) of Fresno, California. She was the proud grandmother to Cassie, Alexis, and Jack and followed their lives with great interest, enjoyment and love.

Joyce graduated from the University of Illinois in 1957, in the first class of the University of Illinois College of Nursing. She was a public health nurse, for five years, in Jefferson Parish, New Orleans, where she and former husband Dr. C. Robert Shoop, who preceded her in death, explored the jazz scene and creole cuisine. Then, for the next seven years, she was a homemaker in Wellesley, Massachusetts where her children were born. She resumed her nursing career at the University of Rhode Island and Butler Hospital after moving to Kingston, Rhode Island where she lived for 55 years.

Joyce was active in the Kingston community; as a board member of the Kingston Water Board, League of Women Voters, Cub Scout Den mother for many years, and Friends of Kingston Free Library. She loved the four seasons of South County, especially the Spring and Summer when the deer and fawns visited her yard often.

Joyce brought happiness and made friends everywhere she went. We miss her. Services and burial will be private.
