Joseph G. Turner

Joseph G. Turner, 86, beloved husband of Jane (Prior) Turner for 57 years, died April 13, 2009. Born in Chelsea, MA, son of Gustave and Lillian (McGonagle) Turner, he was a long-time resident of Providence and a graduate of Hope High School. He was a World War II Army Veteran of the European Theater. Following the war, he graduated from Brown University and was an engineer at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford, CT. He loved spending time at the beach and skiing with his family, coaching baseball and scouting with Boy Scout Troop 11, Vernon, CT. After retiring in 1987, he coordinated the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in the Vernon, CT for many years and continued as a volunteer after moving to Narragansett in 1999. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Marie Turner, and a granddaughter, Hillary Eckland. Besides his wife, Jane, he is survived by two sisters, Doris Flagg of Satellite Beach FL, and Lillian Celani, of Cranston, RI; his sons James Turner and his wife Meloney, of Lebanon, CT, Joseph Turner D.O. and his wife, Natalie, of Warwick, RI and Michael Turner and his wife Maureen, of Marlborough, CT; his daughters, Patricia and her husband John Koelbel of Saint Leonard, MD, Jean and her husband Kevin Eckland of Kennebunk, ME and Maureen and her husband Thomas Kraus, of Foxborough, MA; and his grandchildren Jared, Emily, Joseph, Natalie, Lindsay and Jennifer Turner, Callie, Maria and Matthew Koelbel, Colin, Robert and Amy Eckland and Ellery and James Kraus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 AM in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Rd., Narragansett. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Calling hours Thursday 5-8 PM in AVERY-STORTI Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street Wakefield. In Lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to the RI Chapter of the American Parkinsons Disease Association (APDA), P.O. Box 41659, Providence, RI 02940.
