Joseph B. Fitzgerald

Joseph B. Fitzgerald, M.D., 82, of Kingston, Rhode Island, died on October 29 unexpectedly. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen (Martin) for 55 years. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Benedict Fitzgerald and Frances (Siphron) Fitzgerald.

Joseph graduated from the University of Scranton in 1964 and George Washington University Medical School in 1968. He completed his Internship, Medical Residency and Orthopedic Residency at Rhode Island Hospital. Between Residencies, he served in the United States Army Medical Corp at Walter Reed Hospital. He began his medical practice in 1976 in Wakefield, Rhode Island by founding South County Orthopedics, now Ortho Rhode Island.

Joseph became the team physician for the University of Rhode Island athletic teams in 1976. He enjoyed so many memorable moments traveling with the football, basketball and golf programs. He developed many close relationships the with players, coaches and athletic trainers during his time as team physician and he was Rhody’s biggest fan for 48 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Matthew and his wife Erin (Oneil) of Wakefield, Massachusetts, daughter Jennifer Fitzgerald Esq and her partner Ed Rhodes of Jamestown, and granddaughter Brigid Fitzgerald of Windermere, Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 10:00 AM in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd., Kingston, Rhode Island. Visiting hours are omitted. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, George Schaeffer St., Peace Dale, Rhode Island.
