Jonathan Simler Maguire

Jon Simler Maguire "Jonny B. Goode", of Charlestown Rhode Island and Ft. Myers Fl passed away at home on February 17th the age of 71 after a one year battle with pancreatic cancer. Born March 16, 1945 in Manchester, Ct. son of the late Henry and Florence Simler Maguire. Jon was married to his beloved wife and companion JoAnn for 34 years living their dream of Rhode Island in the summer and winters in Florida Jon leaves, two sons Christopher and Tyler of Scotland Ct.; a sister Kathleen and husband , childhood friend, Michael Hills of Daytona Florida; sister in law and husband Michele and John Scott of Wingdale NY; and brothers in law Raymond and wife Loretta Natell of Pearl River, NY and Brian and wife Mary Natell of Yorktown NY and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jon was predeceased by a brother Gary. Jon's family moved from Manchester to the farm in Vernon, Ct when he was twelve where he and many friends enjoyed racing cars in the fields. Jon left school to join the Navy Seabees following his Uncle Earls footsteps. He was stationed at Davisville RI where he was assigned to the White House Motor Pool serving President Kennedy at Hammersmith Farms in Newport RI. One of the greatest experiences of his young life was his private conversations with the President. Jon was stationed in Vietnam serving various construction battalions and with the Navy Seal Team 2. He left the Navy with honor and pride in 1966. Jon joined the Sheet Metal Workers Local #40 Hartford CT and worked 25 years for CNFLAgg of Meriden Ct. ending his career as a project manager. Jon was a proud 32 degree Master Mason of Fayette Lodge 69 Rockville, a Shriner of Sphinx Temple Newington, Ct. a member of the American Legion Post 274 and Moose Lodge in Ft. Myers Jon loved stripe bass fishing in the waters off Block Island with his brother in law John Scott and together they fished tournaments in Outer Banks and Martha's Vineyard. Jon also loved working on his hot rods, going to car shows, taking care of his yard, listening to music, playing with his dog Toby and mostly just helping people. He will be greatly missed by his family, many neighbors and great friends both in Charlestown and Ft. Myers. A funeral service will be held Monday at 9 am in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are Sunday, 3-6 pm.
