John J. O'Gara

John J. O'Gara, 93, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013. He was the husband of Mildred (Heyman) O’Gara for 63 years. Born in Woonsocket, a son of the late John and Ann (Scott) O’Gara. He was a 1939 graduate of Woonsocket High School and played three varsity sports. He was a W.W.II veteran, serving in the Eighth Air Force, flying 30 combat missions over Germany and received the Air Medal for meritorious service. John was a 1949 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Business Administration. While in college he played varsity football and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. Mr. O’Gara was a manufacturer’s representative in the candy industry for thirty years; served as president of the Boston Confectionery Salesman's Club in 1961; was also honored by the National Confectionery Sales Association in 1979 as a National Candy Ambassador; was the owner of Mayo Enterprises, a food brokerage he founded in 1982; was a past member of the Laurel Lane Golf Club and a member of the Sons of Irish Kings. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John Scott O’Gara of Longmeadow, MA and Christopher J. O’Gara of Falls Church, VA and Narragansett; two daughters, Eileen DeAmbrose of Cumberland and Carolyn Dowling of Greenland, NH; a sister, Esther Gearon of Newport; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Eileen Joyce. His funeral will be held Monday, December 2, 2013, at 9 AM from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Rd., Narragansett. Burial will follow in R.I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Sunday 2-4 PM.
