John W. Jay O'Connor

June 11, 1948 — January 19, 2013

John “Jay” W. O’Connor, Jr., of Matunuck, RI, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013, at The Philip Hulitar Center, with his wife and best friend for over forty years, Patricia (O’Brien) at his side. Born in Providence, the son of the late John and Lillian (McCaffrey) and Barbara (Bannon) O’Connor. He was the grandson of the late Agnes V. O’Connor of Matunuck. After graduating from Hendricken, Jay enlisted in the Army for four years, serving in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Jay was active in the South County Emergency Corps and was a charter member of the Matunuck Fire Department, serving as its First Vice President. He was associated with the Joyce Family Pub for over thirty years. He was retired from Narragansett Electric Co. He was the brother of Kathleen Simpson, James and Stephen O’ Connor and Kimberly Shalvey and leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday 9:00 AM from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Romuald Chapel, Atlantic Ave, Matunuck. Burial will be in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Tuesday 3-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20850.
