John J. Matuza Jr., 78 of South Kingstown, RI passed away on Thursday April 3rd 2025. He is survived by his daughter, Kate Matuza, granddaughter, Sydney and sister, Marie (Matuza) Barnett. He is pre-deceased by his parents, John and Alboma (Nadeau) Matuza, his wife Melinda Matuza and his son John “Jack” Matuza. John also leaves behind many other family members as well as countless friends who are extended family.
John was born in South Kingstown and grew up on Gould Street. He was a graduate of South Kingstown High School and the University of Rhode Island. After school, John enlisted in the Army and served his country in the Vietnam War. After his time in the military, he started building homes and later worked as the building inspector for South Kingstown and Charlestown before he eventually retired and started splitting time between Florida and Rhode Island. Those that knew him would say he had a great sense of humor, quick wit, and a charismatic personality. He would be the first person to give you his opinion whether you wanted it or not. John enjoyed golfing with the boys, carving, watching sports, reading and playing cards with his granddaughter. He was often found tinkering in his shop in his garage.
Visiting hours will be held on April 16th from 9:30 -11:30 am at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI. Following visitation, a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12 pm at St Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High St., Wakefield, RI. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, George Schaeffer St., Peace Dale, RI.
