Obituary

John Joseph Haxton 93, of Wakefield, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 20, 2026.

Born at home in Providence, he was the son of Thomas C. Haxton and Elizabeth (McGuiness) Haxton. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years Marilyn (Mellon) Haxton; his siblings: Florence (Haxton) McGreen, Thomas Haxton Jr, Robert Haxton and Ronald Haxton.

He is survived by his six children: Dale (Gary) Monnier, Timothy Haxton, Jacklyn (Jay) Dedrick, Colleen (Joseph) Salvatore, John Haxton Jr., and Robert (Dana) Haxton. He leaves fourteen grandchildren: Justin, Shannon, Marilyn, Christine, Peter, Matthew, Brandon, Megan, John III, Aidan, Drew, Hannah, Moira, and Quinn. Four great-grandsons: Haxton, Reno, Charlie and Greyson.

John graduated from La Salle Academy, Providence class of 1950. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served for three years.

John followed in his father's footsteps owning and building the first liquor superstore on Bald Hill Road, Haxton's Tollgate Liquors, Inc., where he worked for over 50 years. The store continues to operate and evolve today as family carry on his legacy.

An avid golfer, he was a long-time member of Point Judith Country Club, and a long-time member of The Dunes Club in Narragansett. He was a parishioner of Saint Mary's Star of the Sea Parish/ Christian Brothers Center in Narragansett.

John took pride in being a family man and his children can attest, whether it was Seadown on Boston Neck Road, Seaplace on Longboat Key, or in a Winnebago on the way to Disney World, his presence made that place home.

Per the family's wishes all services and burial will be private. In Lieu of flowers, contributions honoring John's memory may be sent to HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI. 02904.
