John Hamill, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2020 in Gainesville, Florida. John was born in Providence, Rhode Island, to Cornelius and Julia (Yoment) Hamill on September 25, 1940. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, veteran, teacher, and coach. John taught social studies in West Warwick for 29 years. After his retirement, he mentored student teachers at the University of Rhode Island. John was a proud member of the Narragansett Lions Club, serving as treasurer for 20 years. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award for service by the Lions Club International Foundation. He was a supporting parent who never missed a little league baseball game, Pop Warner and high school football, high school soccer games, or a wrestling match. He was an avid reader who discussed books and recommended authors to his friends. In the summer, John loved nothing more than spending the early morning at the Narragansett Beach before the heat and the crowds. He looked forward to football season in the fall to cheer for the Patriots. He enjoyed traveling in his retirement; especially, to visit his grandchildren of whom he was particularly proud. He is survived by his wife, Caroline (Fouty) Hamill as well as his two sons, Jon (Shannon) Hamill of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, and Jeffrey Hamill of Providence, Rhode Island. He treasured his grandchildren, Matthew, Hannah, and Hadley. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Mahoney (Jim) and his brother Ron (Kathleen) Hamill, both of Wakefield, Rhode Island. Services will be private.
