John Gemma, 70, of Charlestown, passed away Thursday in Boston, following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Bean) Gemma. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John and Louise (Carlone) Gemma. Mr. Gemma was a Juvenile Corrections Officer for the State of Rhode Island retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and he served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed feeding his birds, tending to his garden, fishing, and walking the beach. Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Jason Gemma, Justin Gemma, and James Gemma, all of North Providence; a step-son, Jerry Duhamel, III of Attleboro, MA; and five grandchildren, Charissa, Ethan, Isabella, Olivia, and Liliana. He was the father of the late Jon Gemma. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Saturday in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fisher House of Boston, P.
