John J. “Jack” Cottrell III, 82, of West Kingston, passed away on Tuesday, May 6th surrounded by his family. Born in West Kingston, to his loving parents, the late J. Jesse Cottrell Jr and L Virginia (Kenyon) Cottrell. He was the devoted husband to Patricia “Patty” (Fish) for 46 years.
Jack held many jobs before beginning his career in the grounds department at the University of Rhode Island where he worked for over 25 years, until his retirement. When not working, Jack could often be found volunteering at the Richmond Grange, Washington County Pomona Grange or Rhode Island State Grange, and he was a member of all 3 organizations for over 65 years. While his love of the Grange could be felt by anyone who spoke to him, his love for the Washington County Fair was even greater. Jack served as a volunteer from the founding of the fair, served as its Chairman for 10 years, and Entertainment Chairman for 30 years. His quick whit and sense of humor will be missed by those who knew him.
Besides his wife, Jack is survived by his daughter Roxanne Nelson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were like family.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, May 12th from 9:30 am - 11:30 am in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. A service will immediately follow visiting hours at 11:30 am. Burial will take place in New Fernwood Cemetery, West Kingston, RI.
