Joan Mercedes (Durkin) Owren, 82, of South Kingstown, formerly of Lexington, MA and Stuart, Fl, passed away surrounded by family and loved ones on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Joan was born in Providence on September 5, 1943; she was the daughter of the late Ursula (Burns) Durkin and James Durkin.
Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Stephen Owren, and is survived by her children, Stephanie J. Accaputo of Newport, Kristina U. Strom of South Kingstown, Rebecca O. Kinder of Bruceton Mills, WV, Erik I. Owren of Old Lyme, CT, and Kevin S. Owren of Westerly. Sons-in-law: Shawn R. Strom and Timothy H. Kinder. Daughters-in-law: Brenda Owren and Charlotte Owren.
She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Miranda J. Accaputo, Matthew J. Accaputo, granddaughter-in-law Krista Accaputo, Megan P. Accaputo Smith, grandson-in-law, Ryan Smith, Sean R. Breslin, Luke R. Strom, Addison K. Strom, Timothy S. Kinder, James E. Kinder, Hope R. Kinder, Jessica C. Kinder, Annalise M. Owren, Benjamin M. Owren, Stella J. Owren, Noah C. Owren, as well as great-grandchildren, Lucy J. Smith and Roy J. Smith. Joan was the sister of the late Barbara Esbree and leaves behind her sisters, Mary-Ellen Durkin of Indiana, Deryl Benoit, and brother-in-law Robert Benoit of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and Susan Woodall of Westerly.
A wake will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, Rhode Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 20, 2026, at 10:00 AM, at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, 114 High Street, Wakefield, Rhode Island. Burial will follow at Saint Francis Cemetery in Wakefield, Rhode Island.
