Joan Hurdis, 88, of Narragansett, died Thursday. She was the wife of the late Lt. Colonel Richard Hurdis. Born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Anna R. (Walsh) McLaughlin. Mrs. Hurdis was a teacher and administrator for the Salvation Army. She loved the beach, was an avid reader, was proud of her Irish Heritage, and was very dedicated to her catholic faith. Mrs. Hurdis will be remembered as having a great love for children, spending much of her teaching career working at the day care center for the Salvation Army. She is survived by five children, Richard Hurdis of East Providence, Peter Hurdis of Wakefield, David Hurdis of Wakefield, Shelley Lonergan of Narragansett, and Nancy Kelley of Narragansett; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late John “Jack” Hurdis and sister of the late Terry Moore. The funeral will be Tuesday 8:45 AM from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Mary Star of the Sea, Narragansett. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are Monday 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 864 Pt. Judith Road, Narragansett, RI 02882.
