Joan Adamowicz Cook

January 21, 1940 — August 14, 2022

Joan Adamowicz Cook, 82, formerly of North Kingstown, R.I. passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2022. Born in Lebanon, NH, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Eleanor (Moynihan) Adamowicz. She was the devoted wife of the late J. Edwin Cook for 57 memorable years. A graduate of Barnwell High School in South Carolina, Joan earned her bachelor’s degree in English and Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Rhode Island. For many years, Joan was a dedicated speech pathologist for the Newport School System, helping hundreds of children over the years. She was very involved in the Catholic Church and donated her time to several charities and causes in her community. Joan volunteered at Scalabrini Villa working with Alzheimer's patients and also served as the treasurer of The Little Flower Home, an organization serving homeless pregnant mothers and their children. Joan’s most treasured work was with Gabriel’s Trumpet, a Catholic bookstore where she volunteered for many years as a buyer and cashier. Joan also traveled extensively with the church, visiting religious sites around the world, which fulfilled her faith and love of history. Joan loved the Red Sox, Jeopardy, and a good chardonnay. Her greatest love was her family. She is survived by her children Steven Cook (Lynn Malloney) of East Greenwich, RI, and Alison Ricco (Sam) of Norton, MA; three amazing grandchildren, Julia Ricco, James Cook, and Matthew Ricco; and her beloved sister, Anne Theis, of Crosslake, MN. Visiting hours will be held on August 22, 2022, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI; followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield, RI. Burial to follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association in Joan’s memory at www.lung.org.
