Jeannette Costa

October 6, 1931 — January 11, 2026

Jeannette Theresa Costa (Smith), 94, passed away on January 11, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. A near lifelong resident of the Ocean State, Jeannette was born in West Warwick to William and Della (Champagne) Smith.

She attended Wakefield Grammar School before graduating from St. Xavier's Academy in Providence. In 1953, she earned a degree in Biological Laboratory Technology from the University of Rhode Island and began her professional career at Westerly Hospital.

In 1955, Jeannette married and soon devoted herself to raising her six children. Her unwavering commitment to family became the cornerstone of her life. She nurtured her children with love and purpose, instilling values of compassion, resilience, and integrity that continue to echo through generations.

From childhood onward, Jeannette had a passion for performance. Tap dancing brought her joy throughout her life-not only as a dancer but also as a teacher who shared this love with others.

A talented musician with a deep connection to her faith, Jeannette served for many years as a church organist, soloist, and choir director at St. Francis of Assisi in Wakefield and St. Mary's Star of the Sea in Narragansett. Her musical talents reached far beyond the church walls-she accompanied the choir at the University of Rhode Island during her student years and played piano as a volunteer at South County Hospital.

Jeannette's creativity flourished in many forms. As an expert seamstress, she crafted everything from everyday garments to prom dresses and wedding gowns for her children. Whether working from home or through Smith Brother's Shoe Repair-her father's business in Wakefield-she left a lasting impression with every stitch.

Her artistic spirit extended into crafting as well. Jeannette was especially known for her handcrafted Driftwood Santas-treasured gifts among family and friends-which she sold locally including at the Fayerweather Craft Guild in Kingston, where she was a dedicated member. In later years, she embraced painting with enthusiasm, entering local art shows and gifting many framed pieces to loved ones.

As the keeper of memories within her extended family circle, Jeannette ensured that stories spanning generations were honored and remembered.

Well-read and principled, she never hesitated to speak up for what mattered most to her. Her warmth touched countless lives across communities near and far. She delighted in visiting with friends and especially cherished trips to Florida to visit her sister, Shirley.

Jeannette is lovingly remembered by her children: Cynthia Harney (Tom) of Peace Dale; Gail Goodness (Dave) of Enfield, NH; David Costa (Lynn Ann) of Winthrop, ME; Michael Costa (Christine) of Richmond; and Maria Monti (Jim) of West Warwick. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren-Tom, Andrea, Brian, Heather, Annie, Molly, Emily, and Max-and six great-grandchildren: Carter, Sam, Shelby, Kevin, Owen, and Lydia.

She was predeceased by her beloved son Daniel Costa of Las Vegas; her parents; and siblings Robert, Joseph, Wiliam, and Shirley Sprague (Smith).

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 PM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial will take place in St. Francis Cemetry, Peace Dale.

Jeannette Theresa Costa lived a vibrant life filled with music, artistry, faith-and above all-love for family. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
