Jeanne Mathieu Bliss died Saturday at St. Elizabeth’s Home in East Greenwich. Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Alfred J. Mathieu and Florence Proulx Mathieu. She is survived by her brother Robert C. Mathieu of Jamestown, RI. Jeanne graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1941 and cum laude from Regis College in 1945. After graduation from college she taught for two years at Bellingham High School. In 1946 she married Raymond H. Bliss of Woonsocket who pre-deceased her in February 2015. Jeanne and Ray were married for 68 years. They are survived by their four children: Sally and her husband Robert Davis of South Kingstown, RI, Carolyn and her husband David Corcoan of Falmouth, MA, Raymond A. Bliss of Newport, RI, and Julie and her husband Edward Owsik of Woonsocket, RI. Jeanne was also the proud grandmother of eight and beloved great grandmother of seven. Jeanne worked as a secretary in the office of Bibeault and Florentz, Eng. and as a bookkeeper for Bliss Press, Inc. In 1992 she received the Citizens for a Better Woonsocket Award for her work in improving and promoting the city. Her efforts were highlighted in a feature article in the Providence Journal. She was also active in the Meals on Wheels program in Woonsocket. Jeanne was an active member of the Woonsocket Women’s Club for many years, serving as its secretary. After spending many summers at Bonnet Shores, Jeanne and Ray decided to move to Narragansett year-round in 1995. They became members of St. Thomas More Parish. In addition to many happy hours at the beach with children and grandchildren, Jeanne enjoyed playing bridge and creating beautiful needlepoint rugs. The funeral will be 9 am Saturday from the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland Street, Narragansett. Burial will be private in Precious Blood Cemetery, Woonsocket. Visiting hours will be Friday 4-5:30 pm.
