Janet Ellen McCarthy was a loving and caring wife, mother, Nana and friend. She passed away peacefully on the morning of July 30th, 2021, at the age of 72. She was born in 1949 in Massachusetts and spent the first five years of her life living with her beloved grandmother, affectionately known as Vavo. Raised on Poppasquash Point in Bristol, RI, Janet met the love of her life, Jimmy, in 1966. They attended college together at the University of Rhode Island. Janet graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1971. Jimmy and Janet married on August 7th, 1971. They were just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. After getting married, they settled in South County and spent the rest of their lives there together. Janet loved South County, she loved the beaches and she decided that was where she wanted to raise her family. Together she and Jimmy had two children: Dehlia McCarthy (partner, Brian Slusarz) and Katie DePietro (husband, Jimmy DePietro). Janet also had two grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, Max and Rose DePietro. Janet loved to spend her time traveling. She loved to see new places and meet new people. She was a devoted mother and you could often find her in a house full of kids, making dinner for the soccer teams, planning parties or just catching up with her daughters and their friends. Janet also loved animals and was particularly fond of rescues. She showed such a tenderness and gentle touch around anyone or anything that was hurt and needed healing. The last two years of Janet’s life were spent at the Scallop Shell in Wakefield, RI. During this time she made many wonderful friends and was able to reclaim her sarcastic humor with anyone willing to engage in her banter. Her family will be forever grateful for the care she received there. Janet will be missed dearly and remembered fondly by all those who were blessed to have known her. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 4pm-7pm at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. The funeral service will be Thursday, August 5, 2021 at 11:15am at Avery-Storti Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Animal Rescue of Southern Rhode Island, P.O.
