Janet L. Gould

Janet L. Gould, 81, of Wakefield, Rhode Island died Sunday, July 15. She was the wife of Walter P. Gould. Born in Millinocket, Maine, she was a daughter of the late William and Florence (Towle) Lloyd. Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter Susan Manchester and husband John of Wakefield; a son Phillip Gould and wife Carol of Coventry, CT; and three grandchildren: Erica and Hallie Manchester and Emma Gould. She was the sister of the late Jack Lloyd, Kenneth Lloyd and Randy Lloyd. Janet grew up in the remote border town of Coburn Gore, ME and attended the local one-room school house which sparked her interest in teaching. She then attended high school at the Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, ME, traveling back and forth via train and Bombardier. She earned her teaching degree from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1953. She began her teaching career in Rangeley, ME and also taught in South Kingstown and Hope Valley, RI and Newfoundland, Canada. Janet was a second grade teacher in Richmond, RI for many years before retiring in 1993. Among her many awards, she was particularly proud of being selected New England Environmental Teacher of the Year. Janet was very involved in the community as evidenced by her numerous recognitions and awards. She was a long time member of the South Kingstown Parks and Recreation Commission and served on the Board of Trustees of the National Parks and Recreation Association. Janet was involved with the Indian Lake Shores Fire District Council for 50 years and worked tirelessly through the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO) to enable women to further their education. Her selflessness was appreciated by her family and her many friends and neighbors, including the members of the Richmond School family and the Washington County Retired Teachers Association. A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at the Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia Street, Peace Dale, RI on Saturday, July 21 at 11 AM. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PEO (Chapter B, Scholarship Fund, c/o Marion Bowers, 43 Conant Lane, Kingston, RI 02881) or Friends of South Kingstown Parks and Recreation (325 Columbia Street, Peace Dale, RI 02883).
