James (Jim) P. Steffens Sr., 94, of Narragansett, RI, formerly of Lynchburg, VA and Liverpool NY, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Jim was born in Harrington Park, NJ to his loving parents, Otto and Alice (Lake) Steffens. Jim was the loving husband to the late Helen C. (Stoffel) Steffens of Syracuse, NY for 45 years and the late Edythe B. (Blankenship) Steffens, of Lynchburg, VA for 17 years. Jim is survived by; his son Thomas (Mary) of Narragansett, his daughter Robin Steffens and her daughter Kirsten of Lynchburg, VA, his granddaughter Lynni Bennet and his great grandson Keegan Bennet of Acme, Washington, his grandson Ryan Steffens of Puerto Rico, his step children Victoria (David) Shackelford of Lynchburg, Donald (Carol) Blankenship of Wilmington NC, and numerous other family members. Jim is pre-deceased by his beloved son James (Jim) Steffens Jr. of Taos, NM, his sister Lydia A. Rehill and his brothers Otto and Kenneth Steffens. Jim was a lifelong employee of General Electric where he started as an accountant and then worked until retirement as a systems analyst in multiple locations throughout the country. He was a tennis player and skier but his real passion was for golf. He was a dedicated member of the senior men’s golf league at London Downs Country Club where he enjoyed many of his retirement hours and celebrated two holes-in-one. An avid card player, Jim enjoyed bridge and poker and regularly joined a close group of friends in weekly card games. As a music lover Jim is remembered by his children for blasting show tunes on one of the earliest home stereo systems. Jim had a lovely voice which he shared as a member of his church choir. Thankfully, during his retirement Jim taught himself to play the piano. His trusty companion, the piano, became a great source of comfort and entertainment during the months he was under COVID isolation at Brookdale Assisted Living. Jim’s other faithful companion was his little toy poodle Rusty. Rusty came to live with Jim and Edythe as a puppy almost twelve years ago and was a constant and adored companion to Jim until Jim moved to Brookdale and Rusty was rehomed with family in Maine. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the kind staff at Brookdale Assisted Living in Wakefield, RI for their dedicated care of Jim, especially during the trying times during the peak of the COVID epidemic. We would also like to thank the team at Hope Hospice, especially HHA Gabriel Gonzales, for their help and support during Jim’s final weeks. The memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Lynchburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hope Hospice, 143 Main St., Wakefield, RI 02879.
