James "Jim" M.
Paterson
Nov 8, 1954 — Jul 4, 2026
James "Jim" M. Paterson, 71, of North Kingstown, passed away unexpectedly on July 4, 2026, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Jo Ann (Howell) Paterson, with whom he shared 26 years of marriage and many treasured memories.
Jim was a hardworking commercial fisherman whose life was deeply connected to the water. A graduate of South Kingstown High School in Rhode Island, he was proud of his school years and especially enjoyed playing football and wrestling. Those who knew Jim will remember him as a personable, easygoing, and very social man who could make friends wherever he went. Whether he was close to home or out on the road, he seemed to either know someone already or quickly find someone to talk with. Affectionately known as "Taz," Jim earned the nickname for the remarkable speed at which he worked, a reflection of his tireless work ethic and determination that stayed with him throughout his life.
Jim met his wife, Jo Ann, through his daughter Amanda, and together they built a loving life filled with companionship, laughter, and adventure. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life: fishing, spending time by the ocean, skiing with the kids, traveling in the RV with Jo Ann, and making memories with his family. One of their recent adventures included a memorable RV trip to Yellowstone, a journey that reflected Jim's love of the open road and time spent with those he loved. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and time spent with them brought him great happiness.
He also had a deep affection for his dog, Rocky, who was his faithful companion. Rocky went just about everywhere with him, including many car rides, and was a constant source of comfort and friendship. Jim's warmth, humor, and ability to connect with others will be remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his wife, Jo Ann, Jim is survived by his daughters, Amanda Markarov of Cranston and Brynn Bradley of North Kingstown; his sons, Adam Jeffrey Allen and his wife Jennifer of Cranston, RI, and Andrew Peter Smith of North Carolina; his grandchildren Raymond Bradley, Hunter Bradley, Samuel Markarov, Oliver Markarov, and Aubrey Allen; his sisters, Lynne C. Browning and her husband, Glenn, of Tetonia, Idaho, and Nancy Fortin and her husband Laurent of Westerly, RI; his brother Kenneth Paterson and his wife Lori of Narragansett, RI; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 4:00-7:00 PM in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, RI, with a Funeral Home Service at 6:30 PM. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's honor may be made to the Fishermen's Memorial Foundation.
