James “Jim” Montgomery White, 94, passed away peacefully at his Peace Dale home on January 24, 2015. He was the beloved husband of the late Genevieve Frances Kaczowka. Born in Foxborough, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late James M. and Claire (Mulvey) White. He is survived by his six children: James White, Jr. of Narragansett, Victoria Arey of Canterbury, CT, Kathleen Suits of Hope Valley, Mary Anne “Beep” Grimley of Beaufort, NC, Stephen White of Kingston, and Melanie White of Shannock, as well as seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two cats, and many friends. Jim served three years in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Powell, Wyoming before joining the US Merchant Marine in 1941 where he served in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific Theater, as a 3rd and 2nd Assistant Engineer. He owned and operated the Shamrock Club in Wrentham from 1947-1950, and the fishing dragger “Lucky” from 1952-1967, stories of which were recounted in the book, Salt of the Sea. He then worked as a machinist at Wrentham Steel Products until his retirement in 1988, at which time he repaired refrigeration under the name Whiteline Refrigeration. He was a member of the Drones Club and will be especially missed for his sharp wit and entertaining tales. Jim will be interred at the RI Veteran’s Cemetery in a private service. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family at his home for an open-house celebration of his life on February 5 from 4 – 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please give generously to those who are most in need.
