James J. “Joey” Montey, 73, of Westerly, RI, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026, with his loving family at his side. A son of the late Joseph J. and Pauline V. (Hazard) Montey, Joey was a longtime resident of Westerly.

Joey graduated from East Providence High School, East Providence, RI and attended New England Institute of Technology. All of his educational and trade endeavors culminated in him becoming a Master Electrician.

He was destined to be a master electrician from the time he was 9-years old, and prevented his grandmother, Gladys Hazard from throwing out the household toaster. He eagerly and confidently told her that he could make it work again. He methodically took apart the toaster, studied its components, and through trial and error he successfully put it back together making it work like new. Joey’s destiny became a reality when he became an apprentice with Mr. Joseph Pyle at the age of 14 years. He was a determined soul, who never shied away from a challenge, and endeavored to prove any of his skeptics wrong.

Joey took the greatest pride in protecting and providing for his family and friends. He would give you the shirt off his back without question even if it caused him to be without. He will always be remembered for his amazing technological mind; ability to take things apart, analyze, study and figure out the most efficient, clean and optimal way to bring things back together again. He brought life back to anything that was electronically based. He hoped for and wanted future generations, especially within the Narragansett tribe, to take advantage of blessings a career as an electrician could provide. Just as Mr. Joseph Pyle did for him.

Joey is survived by his daughters, Anissa Mattison of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Nikkina Osei-Holden of Woodbridge, Connecticut; his siblings, Carolyn E. Pyle of Anderson, Indiana, Linda M. Montey, Wakefield, Rhode Island, Beverly Y. Brooks of Westerly, Rhode Island, Jonathan L. Montey of Port St. Lucie, Florida; his grandchildren, Xavier Mattison, Paige Mattison and Bryce Mattison of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Jesse E. Holden, III of Woodbridge, Connecticut; and his partner in life, Cynthia Stanton. He was the brother of the late Robert James Montey, Bruce W. Montey and Dennis W. Montey.

Arrangements are in the care of Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St. Wakefield, RI 02879. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 11-1PM followed immediately by a service at 1PM. A Burial will follow at New Fernwood Cemetery, 3102 Kingstown Road, Kingston, RI.
