James Mckenna

July 14, 1971 — August 9, 2025

James T. McKenna, 54, of Narragansett, RI, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025. Born in Providence, RI, he was the loving son of the late James J. McKenna and Nancy J. (Dyer) McKenna.

James “Jimmy” grew up in North Providence before moving to Narragansett after high school. Jimmy was always known for his radiant smile, kind heart, and love of the ocean. He was an extremely generous person who would always put others before himself and was willing to help anyone who needed it. Jimmy worked as a commercial fisherman for over twenty years. Jimmy loved being at sea, where he found his deepest peace, often referring to it as his “home away from home.” The only thing Jimmy loved more than the open ocean was his dog, Wickett. His greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his family, friends, and his beloved dog. “Uncle Jimmy”, as he was affectionately named by his niece and nephews, was known to enjoy cooking (often too much) like he was still on the boat, dreaming up new start-up adventures, bragging about his niece and nephews, and sharing the magic of the sea through his captivating stories. “Uncle Jimmy” has created special memories with each of us that our hearts will hold onto forever.

When you think of Jimmy, picture him sailing out to sea at sunset on his fishing boat with Wickett by his side, the salty breeze in his hair, a smile lighting up his face, surrounded by love as he sails out of Point Judith Harbor into the endless horizon.

Jimmy is survived by his sister, Christine M. McKenna; his niece, MacKenzie M Gallagher; and nephews, Michael J. Gallagher and Marc M. Gallagher. He was predeceased in death by his brother, Mathew D. McKenna, and his parents, James and Nancy McKenna. Jimmy’s absence will be deeply felt by his sister, niece, and nephews, as well as his aunts, uncles, and cousins who shared his life’s journey, and by the countless friends whose lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit.

A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be private. Burial will take place at the New Fernwood Cemetery, located at 3102 Kingstown Road in Kingston, RI.
