James Gareth (Gary) McDonald died on February 14, 2025, at the age of 82.
He was born May 2, 1942, in Oil City, PA to John Raphael McDonald and Jane (Anderson) McDonald. After completing HS he served in the Navy then attended Keene State College on the GI Bill, later earning his Bachelor’s degree from Juniata College. He had an opportunity to attend graduate school to pursue his interest in poetry, and chose instead to pursue other careers. He was proudest of his work helping people with addiction and other behavioral health issues, completing graduate courses in this field. He served as Director of a residential facility, Marathon House, in Coventry RI then continued after to minister to those who needed his help.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Donna Caldwell of South Kingstown, his daughter Veronica (he is predeceased by his daughter, Jean Marie), his granddaughters Savanna-Lee and Aliana Winkfield. He is also survived by his brother John (Jack) McDonald and his sisters Julianna Duda, Jan Mullen and Amy McDonald, and many brothers-in-law and a sister-in law, nephews and nieces who loved him dearly.
The doctor treating him in his last days described him as a “warrior”, who fought hard to stay with us. He was a fierce advocate for just causes, participating in anti-war demonstrations and serving as Editor of Keene State’s newspaper, also participating in national demonstrations for peace and locally for women’s rights and on behalf of many marginalized groups. He continued this advocacy with his wife on behalf of his two adopted daughters, working tirelessly to ensure each received the special services they required.
Recently his love of poetry had a rebirth, as he participated in a group at the SK Senior Center. He attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of South County and supported their social justice efforts.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Adoption RI, the organization that helped bring Jim and Donna together with their two daughters and which he and his wife continued to support.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 18th from 4-6 in the Avery Storti Funeral Home in Wakefield. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, February 19th at 11 am in the Avery Storti Funeral Home. A reception will follow the service.
