James J. Doherty, Jr., 80, of Charlestown, RI and formerly of Walpole, MA, died Tuesday. He was the husband of Elizabeth S. (Giampapa) Doherty and they were married 56 years. Born in Chelsea, MA, he was a son of the late James J. and Ellen (Murray) Doherty. Mr. Doherty operated and then owned the Brigham’s Restaurant in West Roxbury, MA for 48 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and he was a basketball referee for High School, CYO, College and the Army-Navy Games. Mr. Doherty served with the Marines during WW II. Besides his wife he is survived by four children, Dr. James Doherty of IL, Ellen Thweatt and her husband Mickey of Charlestown, RI, Donna Jones and her husband Russell of W. Greenwich, RI, Carol McCarthy and her husband Shawn of Wrentham, MA, 11 grandchildren, and a brother Edward Doherty of Norwood, MA. He was the brother of the late Thomas and William Doherty. The funeral will be 7:45 AM Saturday from the AVERY-STORTI Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM in St. Mary’s Church, 437 Carolina Back Road (Rt. 112), Carolina, RI. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting Hours are Friday 5-8 PM.
