James E. Cummings, 95, of Narragansett, passed away Friday, June 16 in Clearwater, FL. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary L. (McMahon) Cummings. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Patrick “Mickey” and Bride (Garrity) Cummings. Mr. Cummings was employed by Sealtest Ice Cream for over 40 years, and after his retirement he worked as sexton at St. Clements Church in Warwick. He trained dogs in the Us Coast guard during World War II. As an MP, he once evicted Ted Williams from his favorite fishing hole, and became friendly with the Hall of Famer. Jim and Mary lived at Peace Dale House for over 25 years, where he was a past President of the Residents Association. He enjoyed bowling and golf, and was a member of the Exeter Country Club where he once got a hole in one. Jim loved to play the piano, and although he couldn’t read a note, he played beautifully by ear, having learned from listening to his mother play. His piano playing and storytelling were a great source of entertainment for his family and friends alike. He is survived by four sons, Jim (Barbara), of West Kingston, Brian (Dorothy) of Narragansett, Mike (Kelly) of Narragansett, and John (Sal) of Clearwater, FL; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Leo Cummings, and two sisters, Dorothy Dawson and Theresa Kling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 am at St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland Street, Narragansett. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are at the Avery Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, Wednesday, 4-7 pm.
