James Donald Carrigan, aged 89, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, on October 12, 2024, in Westerly, Rhode Island. James had a positive and ardently optimistic demeanor, always ready to offer hope and an encouraging word.
James was born and raised in Rhode Island, graduated from La Salle High School in Providence, RI, and attended Providence College for a year before joining the service. His commitment to service was evident in his 13 years in the US Army during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. After his military service he ventured into a career in sales, employing his charismatic nature. Outside of his professional life, James enjoyed spending time at Rhode Islands’ beaches and relished sharing his love for the ocean, teaching his children and grandchildren how to body surf. He was a skilled baseball and basketball player in his youth and a passionate lover of sports, especially golf, which he played into his 80s. He was a life-long fan of all New England sports teams and a lover of music, including jazz, opera, and other great male vocalists. James was a gentle and kind man and devoted father, grandfather, and friend.
James is survived by his children, Christine Carrigan, Terry Carrigan Frank (husband Larry), Petrea Carrigan, Sean Carrigan, and Patrick Carrigan. He was a much-loved grandfather to James Carrigan, Caitrin Frank Sobota (husband Zachary), Conor Frank, Tyler Shute, Colleen Frank, Case Bongirne, and Evan Bongirne, and a great-grandfather to Shayla, Harrison, and Franklin Sobota. He was preceded in death by his father, William Irving Carrigan; mother Theresa Ruth Libby; and sisters, Maureen Porter and Patricia Killen.
A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in James’ memory, honoring his spirit and his dedication to help find a cure.
