Jacqueline Peterson Alexander, a cherished member of her family, peacefully departed this world on April 25, 2024, at her home in Wakefield, Rhode Island. She was surrounded by the warmth and the love of her family and dedicated caregivers. Jacqueline, born on August 28, 1928, in New York City to Stephen Peterson and Anna Boehm, lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication.
Her journey began at Hunter College, where she embarked on her academic pursuits and met the love of her life during a geology field trip. After earning her bachelor's degree, she joined hands in marriage with Dr. Lewis Alexander on December 30, 1950. Their bond endured for 63 years until Lewis’s passing.
Jacqueline served as a reference librarian at the University of Rhode Island, contributing her knowledge to the academic community. Her talents also found expression as the assistant editor for the Law of the Sea Institute, also as a Naval Underwater Systems librarian and a regional librarian for Edwards and Angell Law Firm in Providence, Rhode Island. She completed her Masters in Library Science from URI in 1972.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Jacqueline's heart overflowed with generosity to many charities. She dedicated her time to volunteering for organizations such as AARP, the Visiting Nurses Association, and the South County Housing Improvement Association. She touched countless lives, earning her recognition in the Who's Who of American Women in 2006.
Jacqueline's interests were as diverse as her accomplishments. She found joy in refinishing furniture and collecting antiques, passions that reflected her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. Traveling to new destinations, immersing herself in the pages of a good book, and time spent with her family brought her immense happiness. She loved all animals and at one time was probably known as the neighborhood cat lady with 5 of her own.
Jacqueline leaves behind a legacy of love carried on by her devoted son, Lance Stryker Alexander, her daughter, Louise Anne Chebert, her son-in-law, Lee Chebert, and her four adoring grandchildren: Dane and his wife, Julie; Drew and his wife, Kayla; Emily Penny and her husband, Luke; and Sarah Chebert. Her spirit lives on in her great-grandchildren, Amelia, Olivia, and Wyatt Chebert, who will continue to be touched by her memory.
A funeral home service will be held on Monday, May 6th at10 am in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St. Wakefield. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
