George T. Sprague

April 24, 1927 — April 30, 2018

George T. Sprague, 91 passed away Monday April 30, at Scalabrini Villa, North Kingstown. A longtime resident of South County and most recently Wakefield, George and his wife Nancy (Coates) Sprague raised their family in Wickford. A World War II Veteran and URI (RI State College) graduate, George was an integral part of the North Kingstown School System for 32 years. He began his career as a humanities teacher, created and built the first guidance department, was principal of North Kingstown Sr. High School, and finished his tenure in administration as Director of Personnel. Outside of his family, George was an avid nature conservationist, hiker, and voracious reader. After his retirement, he spent many years in numerous volunteer roles including Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge caretaker, Ninegret/Block Island piping plover conservation, trail blazer and guide of both Franconia Notch, NH and the RI North-South Trail. George had a lifetime passion for music and theatre. In his 20s, he earned his actors equity card while performing in summer stock at Theatre-By-The-Sea. Later in life he returned to acting starring in American Buffalo at the Second Story Theatre Newport. George and his wife until recently were active members of Jamestown Baptist Church. Born April 24, 1927 in West Warwick, George was one of five sons of the late Edward P. Sprague and Yvonne (Pellerin) Sprague. In addition to his wife of 63 years George is survived by his son Kim Sprague and his partner Ruben Flores, East Setauket, NY; his daughters Bonnie Ashworth and her husband Don, Glocester, RI and Heather Jackson and her husband Patrick, Chesapeake, VA; and three grandsons Kyle Ashworth, and Joe and Ben Jackson. He is also survived by his brother Roland, Florida. A private family service was held May 1 at Avery-Storti Funeral Home.
